The Blue Flag Programme is an internationally recognised system

that awards beaches and marinas for meeting high standards in cleanliness,

environmental management, water quality, safety, and public education.

Over 3,500 beaches worldwide have earned the Blue Flag,

with Greece consistently ranking among the top countries for awarded beaches.

Crete's Commitment to Quality

Because the Blue Flag is a symbol of environmental responsibility and quality,

many local communities in Crete have worked hard to ensure their beaches meet these standards.

Most Blue Flag beaches on the island are found along the northern coast,

where tourism is more developed, though some can also be found on the southern shores.

What Makes a Beach Eligible?

Beaches must meet 32 strict criteria in four main categories:

Environmental Education & Information,

Water Quality,

Environmental Management,

and Safety & Services.
